Book Review, Historical Fiction, Magic, Novel, Science Fiction, Time Travel

Kindred by Octavia E Butler

My Rating: 5/5

Short Summary: After she is thrown back in time to the antebellum south, Dana must stay alive long enough to get home. However, being a modern black woman in a society where she has no authority or identity, sheย struggles with the idea of being a slave as the secrets of her family’s history unfolds around her.

My Review: This is one of my all-time favorite books. Dana is a strong female character that has to overcome many dangers as she continually gets pulled back in time, where she takes her place as a slave on a plantation. This story is fast paced, which is why it kept me so entertained. I was able to snag a copy of this paperback book for my collection and was surprised at how quickly I was able to finish it. I have read it multiple times.

This book exemplifies how the events of the past shape our present and future. Though some of the scenes are less than appealing, they are important episodes in Danaโ€™s past that lead up to her finding out the truth about her family heritage. The story is also a great example of how something good can come out of a terrible situation.

I highly recommend this book to those who like historical fiction mixed in with their science fiction. I was never really a die-hard Sci-Fi fan or historical fiction fan, but this was one I could not put down. I also recommend it to those of you ladies who like to follow strong female characters, who battle men for their identity and place in society, either because of their gender or race.

I bought this book for my own enjoyment.
